Celebrating Women on International Women's Day
A Tribute to Strength, Unity, and Progress
There’s probably a lot of protocol around blog posts and website launches and I should have probably started with some sort of welcome note or all about us thing. Instead, I’d rather share our latest chalkboard creation for Sower Books in Lincoln, NE – it is International Women’s Day, after all. It’s all about honoring the strength, resilience, and brilliance of women — and spreading a message of women uplifting women.
Bringing Icons to Life
I decided to feature three incredible women whose legacies paved the way for progress: Rosie the Riveter, Marsha P. Johnson, and Marie Curie. Each represents a different type of strength, and together, they show the power of unity and support in shaping history.
Rosie the Riveter: Strength Through Hard Work
Rosie symbolizes the power and dedication of the women who worked in factories and shipyards during WWII. Her "We Can Do It!" slogan is a reminder of women’s crucial role in both the workforce and home. Sadly, many images of Rosie’s images are set to be erased from government sites under the guise of "D.E.I." policies, wiping away pieces of our history and the legacies that these women left behind.
Marsha P. Johnson: A Champion for the Marginalized
Marsha was a bold activist, drag queen, and leader of the Stonewall Uprising. She fought for LGBTQ+ rights and social justice, embodying love, inclusivity, and the need to stand up for marginalized voices. On the chalkboard, Marsha stands with open arms, as a proud symbol of embracing and empowering others for the fight for equality.
Marie Curie: A Legacy of Discovery
Marie Curie was a groundbreaking physicist and chemist who discovered radium and polonium, and was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. She represents the women in S.T.E.M. who’ve pushed boundaries, even when our efforts go unrecognized and uncredited. Her story reminds us that women in science can achieve incredible things, and that we must keep innovating and supporting one another.
A Unified Message: "We’re Stronger Together"
The core message of this chalkboard is simple but powerful: When women stand together, we are unstoppable. These three women didn’t just break barriers—they made space for others to thrive, too. "We’re stronger together" is the heart of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month. It celebrates the collective strength of women working together to challenge norms, break barriers, and drive change. The unity of women can create lasting social, political, and cultural progress.
So today, let’s reflect on how far we've come—and how much further we can go in creating a truly equal world for ALL women.
Here’s to strong women: may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.
